Method

How to Calculate VAT

Once you know whether you're adding, removing, or extracting VAT, the maths behind an Irish VAT calculator is simple. Here's how each version works, in plain English.

  1. Adding VAT to a net price

Multiply the net (VAT-exclusive) amount by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 23% VAT, that's the net amount × 1.23. The result is the gross, VAT-inclusive price a customer pays.

  2. Removing VAT from a gross price

Divide the gross (VAT-inclusive) amount by 1 plus the VAT rate. For 23% VAT, that's the gross amount ÷ 1.23. This gives you the underlying net price.

  3. Extracting just the VAT portion

Take the gross amount, multiply by the rate, then divide by 1 plus the rate. This isolates only the VAT euros hidden inside a total, without changing the total itself.

Irish VAT treatment can vary by the type of goods or service being sold. For anything outside a straightforward sale, it's worth checking with Revenue or an accountant rather than relying on a general Irish VAT calculator.

Worked example: €100 at 23%

Net price€100.00
Add VAT (× 1.23)€123.00 gross
VAT amount€23.00
Remove VAT (÷ 1.23)€100.00 net
Extract VAT (123 × 0.23 ÷ 1.23)€23.00 isolated

In plain English

Net is what the business keeps. VAT is the government's cut, collected on their behalf. Gross is what the customer actually hands over. Every VAT calculation is just moving between these three numbers.

Why use a tool

Online VAT Calculator

Doing VAT maths by hand is easy to get wrong, especially under a rate like 13.5% or when juggling several invoice lines. An online VAT calculator removes that risk and gives you a clean answer instantly.

  • Saves time on every invoice

No spreadsheet formulas to remember or rebuild — just type the amount and read the result.

  • Reduces costly mistakes

A single misplaced decimal on a VAT return can cause real problems. A calculator removes that risk.

  • Built for sole traders and small teams

Freelancers, contractors, and small business owners can quote, invoice, and price accurately without waiting on an accountant for every figure.

VAT Deduction Calculator

Most people searching for a VAT deduction calculator mean one of two things: removing VAT from a VAT-inclusive total to see the underlying price, or isolating just the VAT euros hidden inside a total. This page does both, using the same calculator above.

Switch the calculator to Remove VAT to deduct VAT from a gross figure, or Extract VAT to see only the tax portion without changing the total.

Example: €246 total, 23% VAT

Gross total€246.00
Deduct VAT (÷ 1.23)€200.00 net
VAT deducted€46.00
Second tool

Margin and VAT Calculator

Work out your profit, margin percentage, and full VAT breakdown together — useful when pricing stock for resale or checking a quote makes sense before VAT is applied.

Net selling price€0.00
VAT amount€0.00
Gross selling price€0.00
Profit€0.00
Margin0.0%
Margin = profit ÷ net selling price × 100

When to use this

Handy for resale pricing, checking a margin still works once VAT is added, or reverse-engineering a cost price from a target margin and VAT rate.

A note on margin

Margin here is calculated on the net (VAT-exclusive) selling price, which is the standard way most Irish businesses track profitability, since VAT collected isn't part of your income.
